Song of the Day: #22

The best thing about the BBC Live Lounge always has been, and always will be, the cover songs that the artists perform. It allows us to see an artist push the boundaries of their music capabilities. While the results aren't always excellent, most of the time we get a brilliant piece of work.

Today's SOTD comes from Rita Ora, of 'Hot Right Now' fame. Rita stopped by the live lounge last week to perform her DJ Fresh-produced single, and for the obligatory cover she opted for the bewilderingly successful 'Somebody That I Used To Know' by Gotye (listen to the original here). I'm not going to beat around the bush. I am completely disinterested in Gotye. He is complete snooze-fest. The only redeeming feature of 'Somebody That I Used To Know' is the feature from Kimbra, who actually breathes a little life into the song, which prompted me to say to a friend, "it would be good if there was a version of the song that was just female vocals". Rita Ora must have been eavesdropping (she definitely wasn't) because she proceeded to tackle the song in the iconic Maida Vale Studios. Rita does a fantastic job of actually putting some emotion into the song. Well done Rita Ora. You can listen to her cover of the track below.
